The intoxicating scent of jasmine in a beautiful nourishing hair oil!
From LBCC Historical :
1772 Scented Jasmine Hair Oil
Toilet de Flora
Hair oils are one of the oldest essential hair care products which is still used today. This recipe came from the Toilet de Flora. It didn't specify which flowers to use, only that Almond oils were the most used oils for the hair and that you choose a flower that is pleasing to you.
This historical hair oil is a rich source of vitamin E. It is known to thicken hair and stop hair from falling out. It also has essential minerals such as magnesium and calcium and high contents of healthy fats which hair needs. It also has Vit D.
We chose Jasmine for many reasons. First and foremost we put it to a vote on the fan page and you all wanted to see more jasmine used. secondly, Jasmine is a very historic oil and flower which was very popular in the 18th century and it is ESPECIALLY good for your hair.
Benefits of Jasmine Oil for the hair: Historically it is believed to sooth the mind and nervous system because of it's smell, aphrodisiac qualities, and many other benefits. It stimulates hair growth and adds needed nutrients to make hair thicker, healthier, and shinier. It works very well to tame unruly, frizzy, coarse, curly, and dry hair- perfect for all hair types. Jasmine oil helps add volume, length and luster. It leaves your hair soft with a light intoxicating scent. It also strengthens your hairs roots. It has antiseptic, fungicide, and antimicrobial, properties which make it perfect for those with scalp issues. It locks in moisture naturally and keeps your hair soft. It also fights against head lice which was an important feature historically.
So as you can see, this recipe was a must for me to reproduce as it is still relevant in today's world. If you are practicing historical hair care with your powder and pomatum, you will use this after you wash your hair in either Lye or olive oil ( castile) soap, which was commonly used in the 18th century. Historically women used hair powder as a sort of dry shampoo as well as to give their hair body and volume. They used the pomade ( pomatum) to make the powder stick, but to also give the hair the nutrients it needed. Using those two hair care products, one didn't need to shampoo their hair very often. It quickly became healthy and thick. But when they did wash their hair, this hair oil was a necessity.
